What does the evidence show?

A 2025 systematic review evaluated 22 human studies examining gut microbiota in relation to chemotherapy response, efficacy and toxicity. It identified associations between microbial patterns and treatment outcomes across several cancer types and regimens. Causality has not yet been established. [4]

The science is promising, and the field is evolving. These associations do not establish that a particular probiotic product improves cancer outcomes.

The microbiome and immunotherapy

Research reviews examine the gut microbiota’s role in immune function and response to immune-checkpoint inhibitors. [5] Other reviews consider opportunities for microbiome-targeted drug development and the relationship between gut microbiota and immune-related adverse events. [6] [7]

This does not mean that probiotics have been proven to improve cancer survival or replace cancer treatment. It means that the microbiome has become a legitimate area of scientific investigation within modern oncology.
